Spanning over 40 years of filmmaking, Allen’s distinct voice has evolved from his early days as a television gag writer to an illustrious film career. As well as being rapturous love letters to the city of New York, Allen’s films wear their obsessions on their sleeves. From his ongoing love affair with jazz, homages to Allen’s film heroes Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini, to his quest to find meaning in the absence of god, his work is truly, delightfully original. Featuring interviews with the elusive Allen and his many collaborators and admirers, Woody Allen: A Documentary covers the waterfront for Allen enthusiasts while offering a comprehensive career overview for the newly initiated. It’s all here, his earlier ‘funny works’ like Take the Money and Run and Bananas, to his Oscar winning Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters and the recent Midnight in Paris. Woody Allen: A Documentary opens at ACMI on Friday 1 June for a strictly limited season.
