Open Channel offers a nationally recognised CERTIFICATE III PROGRAM for emerging filmmakers.
Michael Bissell completed his Certificate III in Media with Open Channel in August 2012, specialising in Documentary and making a short film on Snowboard manufacturing in Victoria. After completing his course, Open Channel supported Michael to get an industry attachment in the camera department on the ABC comedy series Problems, and Michael has since gone on to work as a Camera Assistant on SBS / FremantleMedia Series Better Man.
Open Channel offers industry-led PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SHORT COURSES for both emerging and early career practitioners, and for seasoned professionals. These short courses, taught by leading industry professionals are run on demand, and span most production disciplines.
Short Courses running the first quarter of 2013 include Introduction to Editing (Final Cut Pro, Avid, Premiere Pro, Final Cut X) , Advanced Editing (Final Cut Pro, Avid, Premiere Pro, Final Cut X), Documentary or Drama Filmmaking Introduction ( for digital and for documentary), Law Camera Action!, Screenwriting Introduction, Cinematography Foundation, Location Sound, Production Management, Jason Conduit completed a Location Sound course with industry leader Gary Wilkins (The Pacific, Where the Wild Things Are), and went on to work as a Sound Recordist with GTV Channel 9, where he has been working full-time for 20 months. Says Jason of his experience at Open Channel, “Gary’s knowledge and expertise equipped me with exactly the right skills to secure the position I now hold.”
Open Channel’s ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF SCREEN AND MEDIA (FEATURE FILM AND TV SERIES DEVELOPMENT)is the only course of its type in Australia, offering participants the chance to learn the business and creative skills needed to guide their script through development over a 12 month period. The course is taught by Producers, Writers, Directors and Development Executives behind such film and TV productions as Red Dog, Snowtown, The Slap, Terra Nova, Blue Heelers, Not Quite Hollywood, Lake Mungo and Offspring.
Since beginning the course, 2012 student Jane Hampson has worked as writer on ABC series Dance Academy, and her feature project Tamil Tigress was selected to pitch at Melbourne International Film Festival 37ºSouth: PostScript & Direct – a special initiative that enables selected emerging local screenwriters and screenwriter / producer teams to meet, and pitch to, a range of experienced Australian / NZ producers.
Applications for the 2013 program are open from 17th December.
