Make a Short Film in Five Days (16 – 20 Jan)
Always wanted to learn more about filmmaking, but just haven’t had the time, or the opportunity?
This summer holiday course will fast track your knowledge of all aspects of filmmaking. In just five days you’ll learn each stage of the filmmaking process working with industry experts in AFTRS state-of-the-art studios.
You’ll be taken through from concept and script through to shooting and editing a short film and you’ll get hands-on experience working with a small team, filming professional actors with a script devised by your group. The course will cover:
core cinematic storytelling skills brainstorming and pitching story ideas writing for the screen the language of camera, lighting and sound work-shopping and blocking real actors crew roles on set editing with Final Cut Pro post production audio
Your group’s vision will be realised with a screening of your short film at the end of the week (friends and family welcome) with students receiving a copy of their film, and the raw footage from the shoot to refine their film in their own time.

Lighting Fundamentals (20 – 24 Feb).
Learn basic lighting skills in cinematography and how they apply to the visualisation of a story or concept in this intensive five day course with Louis Irving.
The course will be taught in our state-of-the-art studios examining artificial light sources, and on a location shoot studying the changeability of natural light in both exterior and interior locations.
Topics covered, include:
Natural light and artificial light. – colour temperature Direct/bounce light, Soft/hard light The use of anti fill, cutters, diffusion gels Types of film lights and camera filters and basic lighting equipment packages for use on location Lighting continuity Lighting the face Contrast ratios Dealing with reflections Camera techniques to assist lighting General lighting and post production
