To meet an industry shortage, up to 15 scholarships are available for both the Assistant Directing and Post Production part-time Certificate 4 level training courses. Both have been developed to meet jobs needs in consultation with the Sydney film and Television industry to provide real, practical and current skills. Both opportunities are by application and will be competitive, apply online by 19 April.

Assistant Directing Scholarship

This brand new scholarship opportunity is for aspiring Assistant Directors at Metro Screen April – June 2014 over a series of weekends. It provides training in the responsibilities of an Assistant Director in coordinating all production activity and supervising the cast and crew. Runners, PA’s or Third AD’s looking to take the next step in their Film and Television careers are highly encouraged to apply for one of the 15 scholarship places.

Over a series of weekends and evenings, the scholarship-winners will be trained in:

Occupational Health & Safety
Crew roles and responsibilities
Planning and scheduling
Callsheets, Floor Management and Running a Set
How to get the best from the team
Industry software and packages
Industry protocols and standard practice

The course content has been designed in consultation with working directors and assistant directors, including the Australian Directors Guild so that it’s most relevant for an AD job. Based between Metro Screen’s media lab, and studio, teaching will consist of workshops, classroom based tutorials, practical exercises and self-paced assignments. The core tutor is an established First Assistant Director, and there will be guests to talk about their key relationships with a First AD. To give students practical insight into the role, there will be a set visit and possibly the opportunity to shadow a First Assistant Director in their work.

Upon graduation, students will have completed 5 units from the nationally accredited qualification, Certificate IV in Screen and Media – CUF40107. (This can be converted into a full qualification through the short course program.)

Post Production Scholarship

To fill the need for qualified Editors and Assistant Editors in Film and TV job market, there’s a new Post Production Scholarship at Metro Screen. It provides the opportunity to be one of the 15 people selected to specialise in Post Production with a Certificate IV in Post Production, a showreel and a work placement or internship. Although the course will be geared around the skill level of the successful applicants, people with some basic editing experience are encouraged to apply since places will be competitive.

The part-time course under the scholarship will cover:

Fundamentals of editing, cutting sound and dialogue
Data management and workflow
Creating basic effects, titles design and colour grading
The craft of editing and creative thinking
How to work effectively
How to market yourself to industry
Thorough grasp of the whole post-production process, the editing and post
departments as well as the relationships with other creative and crew members
Industry trends and current developments in software and editing platforms
AVID editing software – the current industry standard

The course content has been designed in consultation with working and will involve practical exercises, workshops, classroom based tutorials and self-paced assignments. Under the direction of an established editor 2 days per week over 30 weeks, the scholarship-winners will work with footage (can bring your own) to create cuts in documentary, drama, factual and news style content to develop a personal showreel. There will also be visits to production and post production houses to get a sense of real-world working environments.

Upon graduation, students will take home the nationally accredited qualification, Certificate IV in Screen and Media – CUF40107.
