The public re-consecration of Melbourne’s Capitol Theatre had a full house, excited bureaucrats, sprays of tinsel, bits of opera, androgynous dancing and a humungous amount of flashing lights set to music. There was a good show and plenty of gossip.
The hundreds of students who were deeply engaged in the transformation, from publicity to design work, logistics and advocacy were glowing with satisfaction. Small groups of academics sat in a collective exhalation of relief as a two year vision came to fruition.
