Golden Horse: mainstream favourites pipped at post

The Taiwan hosted Golden Horse Awards, aka the Chinese-language Oscars, this year rewarded lesser known festival films over commercial success. Local hero Seediq Bale took the main prize.

The contenders, essentially films made in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, numbered around 30 this year, with a dozen sharing the awards. Traditionally, HK films have taken most of the top prizes. However, the increasing number of films co-produced across the region in recent years has seen that record diluted.
