Johnny Depp made pirates glamorous. Enough so, a few years ago, to persuade the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft, then headed by ICAA’s Adrianne Pekotic, to avoid words like “pirate” and “piracy” – in favour of blunter words like “theft”.

More recently AFACT initiated the Intellectual Property Awareness Foundation. Although the new organisation’s name is much more circumspect, its CEO Lori Flekser came straight to the point on day one of the ICAA conference, titling her presentation “It’s official, Australians are among the BEST pirates in the world.”
