Union and employers co-operate to push new funding scheme

The industry union MEAA is joining with the producers' association SPA in a radical new proposal to support low budget films.

The Screen Producers Australia in association with the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance this week unveiled the bare bones of a low budget funding mechanism which they would jointly run. They would mean the employers’ body (SPA) and the union (MEAA) will be functioning like an agency  – which is a pretty startling development in our context, though it is more familiar overseas.
