Ingratiating himself with the South Vietnamese refugee community, he grapples with his loyalties as he continues to spy on them and report back to the Viet Cong.
What genre is The Sympathizer?
A few! Black comedy, spy thriller, war drama and historical drama.
Is it based on a book?
Yes. It’s based on the Pulitzer Prize winning 2014 novel of the same name by the Vietnamese-American professor and novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen. Reviewing the novel in 2016 for ArtsHub, Katie Levers wrote:
The Sympathizer emerges out of this research and is informed, disturbing and also, strangely enough, laugh out loud funny. It is almost impossible to believe that this masterful piece of writing is a debut novel.
