Goalpost Pictures’ The Sapphires has taken £337,641 (A$518,000) in its opening week box office in Britain, on 233 screens, for an average of £1,499 (A$2,300). Total box office includes Wednesday and Thursday previews.
It took £256,000 (A$393,000) in its first weekend, averaging £1,098 (A$1,685) per screen.
The Sapphires had strong marketing support from distributor eOne (owner of Australia’s Hopscotch), so the result has to be seen as disappointing, even in a UK market which continues to be dominated by the success of Skyfall, the latest in the James Bond franchise.
