Melbourne provided a perfect local day to open SPAA 2012 – enough sun to tempt with the promise of warmth, enough wind across Docklands to keep delegates moving quickly into the comfort of the renovated wharf building sticking out into the water.

The place has been neatly renovated into a line of buildings along a side walk which guarantees a thrashing plug of producers between anyone and where they want to be. Upstairs in the toilets are like a brothel designed by David Lynch. The walls are shiny black, the light is so dim we can’t read the signs and the striped walls in corridor make me think we are working inside a giant pair of pyjamas.
