If you think about producers of high quality television drama, the BBC has got to be at the top of your list. Kate Harwood, Head of Drama Production, England at the BBC talked at Screen Forever about the importance of drama to the broadcaster, and the challenge of getting good writers. Andrew Einspruch was at the talk.
Amazingly, the BBC makes 65% of its own content. Harwood, who has been at the BBC for 23 years, and has been Head of Drama Production, England, since last December, has been a big part of it. Her fingerprints are found on EastEnders, Holby City, Doctors, Casualty, Luther, Cranford, Tess of the D’Ubervilles, Silent Witness, Silk and Five Daughters, to name a few. (She made it clear she was not involved with Doctor Who, which is made in Wales, nor Downton Abbey, which is on an entirely different network.)
