With many filmmakers having frantically finished their film in time for MIFF, Nadia Tass is still in rehearsals. Well known in the film world for directing Matching Jack, Malcolm, The Big Steal, Rikky and Pete and Fatal Honeymoon, her latest production is on stage at MIFF. The Flick is about movies and the transition from 35mm prints to digital screenings. It’s also about examining three different people in the cinema who are dealing with this transition.
The Flick was written by American playwright Annie Baker, who was very keen for Tass to direct. Tass previously directed Baker’s play, The Aliens. They met up in New York and a week later, the play was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Tass finds Baker’s work to be ‘so attuned to life today. She understands what’s going on with people.’
