They roam the night beyond the stockade, spec scripts on their thumb drives, their talent their only friend. Who are the people nominated for the 2012 Monte Miller Award?

In reality, of course, the finalists are very different from the stereotype. But this part of the trope is true: the role of a writer’s artistic vision is a messy business in the Australian screen sector. The Monte Miller Award for unproduced scripts (long form) is a way of encouraging the old ideal that a script can be written by an inspired writer away from the industrial grind, and find a home in the production process.
