Tina Kaufmann delves into her huge repository of key blogs to find out what the tragics really think are the key films at MIFF. They are also worth hunting out across the net. No doubt a modest outlay of funds will enable you to find all these masterpieces for your delectation at home. We go in hope, anyway.

Investigating the Melbourne Film Festival program is a much more daunting task for me than Sydney’s. It’s bigger and ScreenHub is only giving me one column for my MIFF picks, so I’ve got to be brutal and stay away from much that I’d otherwise love to include. But there are strands in the program that will find their own specialised audiences – the music docs, the late night movies, the Italian giallo retrospective, and even the films from North Korea.
I’m glad Adrian Wootten is back; I’ve really enjoyed several of his presentations in the past, filled as they are with stills, clips and opinion; his talks on Fitzgerald and Hemingway sound very enticing. But on to the films. (Luckily, a number have already screened at SFF, so check my SFF pieces for relevant recommendations.)
