Producer Leanne Tonkes had been at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008 with Stephen Lance, who was attending the premiere of his short film, Yolk, which was in competition. They spent a bit of time attending screenings and talking about other projects they were keen to work on. Stephen mentioned his idea for My Mistress, and Leanne immediately knew that “there was a story! We have to do that.”
She thought it would be a great first film for Stephen, and knew that he had a good understanding of what a teenage boy (the protagonist, played by Harrison Gilbertson) was like growing up in Queensland.
