Thailand’s National Film Awards, aka the Subhanahongsa or Golden Swan Awards, changed its systems this year, resulting in some unexpected winners at the weekend’s ceremony.
It’s fair to say that change to the running of the awards was due, with organisers criticised for a “closed shop” approach to jury appointment, nominee and winner selection over many years. On more than one occasion, juries have handed out gongs to films which haven’t actually been made, so corruption has been an issue.
