Australian director Luigi Acquisto went to East Timor in 1999, shortly after the Indonesian military pulled out of the country. He felt compelled to go due the images of East Timor he saw on television, and as a filmmaker he “wanted to see if there was a story there”.
Fifteen years on, he and Timorese co-director Bety Reis have made the country’s first feature film, a re-telling of the story of Martin Guerre set in East Timor during the Indonesian occupation.
