With a crop of excellent films, cut-through for antipodeans at this end of 2014 is a hard ask. But Cate Blanchett came through, along with American Elisabeth Moss for her performance in Top of the Lake.

At the moment, awards contenders are up against 12 Years a Slave, appealing to righteousness and democratic sentiment, American Hustle (nostalgia and the ’80s) and Behind the Candelabra (inside story about famous Hollywood character).
