Albie Thoms was both a pioneer, a staunch individualist and a beloved ratbag. Knowing he was dying of cancer, he arranged a final party, and only just failed to make it.
Along with David Perry, Aggy Read and John Clark, he started Ubu Films, a collective which made experimental films. It was a precursor to the Sydney Filmmakers’ Collective, and its shorts were a staple of that catalogue.
