The nation’s exhibitors do not give awards to shoot unknown talent to instant fame. They like their heroes to tuck their trophies into a gleaming cabinet behind an Oscar, or at least next to a shimmer in the air which could soon be occupied by the Golden Man.

With AIMC Star of the Year Award winner, Mia Wasikowska in France filming Madame Bovary, the organisers had to find some kind of substitute. So they played a clip reel highlighting the 24-year old actress’s career and followed it with a recording from Toronto where Robyn Davidson, who Wasikowska plays in the John Curran film Tracks, stated “I’m delighted to be in Toronto with Mia Wasikowska who so wonderfully plays me in Tracks, the film of the book I wrote so long ago. She’s a fabulous actress – she was the one I always wanted to play the part so I’m delighted to be able to officially present her with this actor’s award which she so deserves”.
