For many filmmakers, the ABC’s Natural History Unit was driven strongly by the BBC model, with those mellifluous Attenborough narrations. They were dedicated to creatures, with almost no human characters, not even scientists. But the origin of the unit was very different, and inherently strange, and weirdly cute. At least according to one uncorroborated version of its history.
The person who can probably most claim to be the originator of the Natural History Unit was Charles Kenneth Taylor, aka Ken, who was also a poet and painter. He was interviewed by Larry Zetlin, himself a veteran wildlife filmmaker from Brisbane.
