The 2013 Adelaide Film Festival opened with massed niceties of the Festival Centre, the occasional bang of a gun, and the throaty roar of desperate camels. The Don Dunstan award for Scott Hicks gave him a chance to reflect on the nature of chance and the special quality of living in Adelaide.

The residents of South Australia are never going to learn the French habit of pounding on the floor, but the relaunch of the Adelaide Film Festival seemed to go down a treat.
