James Hewison is a familiar figure in Melbourne. He arrived in St Kilda to run the George Cinema in its glory years for Palace, and was discovered by a wider public when he took over the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2001, and became an intense, nomadic torrent of words about film, the festival program and the direction of cinema. After he left six years later, much larger forces were changing the role forever, as boards around the world split the job into separate creative and administrative functions.
