Richard Finlayson, currently the chief operating officer at SBS, has been appointed the new head of television at the ABC. He is a dark horse appointment, never touted as a front runner in the media speculation.

In an email to staff, Managing Director of the ABC Mark Scott carefully laid out
Finlayson’s virtues:

“Richard brings to the job deep experience in media and broadcasting with a career that has spanned, TV production and programming, business development, digital distribution and print journalism.
