Walk into an Australian multiplex and it is easy to think that 3D is dead in the water. Films made to be shown in 3D are only on 2D, and audiences line up without protest. It looks like a fad whose time has gone.
From a recent survey for RealD, it seems our audiences tend to share the sense of gloom about 3D films. 37% think the number of films they will see in stereo will drop in the next year, while only 14% think it will rise. Of the people who will see Hobbit 3, only 41% will see it in 3D. Of the films now released, only 35% said they would choose the 3D version of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes; 34% for Guardians of the Galaxy, and only 20% for The Boxtrolls.
