Cinema Nova’s list of the most popular titles released in 2011 shows renewed interest in Australian made and “pure arthouse” films amongst the Carlton venue’s audience. Moviegoers at Melbourne’s home of independent film enjoyed original stories, exploring new territory, revelling in directorial idiosyncrasy and, understandably, watching Ryan Gosling do stuff.

Four Australian films made it into the top 20 including Kriv Stenders’ critical and audience hit RED DOG, the internationally acclaimed true-crime thriller SNOWTOWN, Fred Schepisi’s all-star Patrick White adaptation THE EYE OF THE STORM, and ORANGES & SUNSHINE, the true story of Forgotten Generations champion Margaret Humphreys. This is twice the number of local hits that appeared in Nova’s top 20 for 2010, which included the Oscar-nominated ANIMAL KINGDOM and Top End musical BRAN NUE DAE. Cinema Nova released 27 Australian made titles during the 2011 calendar year, 9 of which were exclusive to Nova.
