Cinema technology is getting very very schmick. Words like 4K and High Dynamic Range and laser projectors and Dolby Atmos are sexy, but under the hood they are solving two large technical problems.
3D glasses require a lot of light, and so the experience of watching the films is inherently duller. To fix that, premium and large format cinemas are mounting projectors in carefully calibrated banks to blast the screen with light. But Australian audiences are taking a dim view of the 3D experience in their local multiplex and quietly gone on strike.
