Grant Dodwell first registered the website for Australian National Theatre Live nine years ago, well before the rise and rise of the British efforts which bring the Old Vic, The National Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to world audiences.
The problem for theatre actors in Australia was simple. Plays disappear into thin air when the run ends, and the country is so large that they only have city audiences. This has worsened as fewer and fewer companies are touring anything larger than a two hander with a couple of chairs.
