Only a few years ago, filmmakers thought the new digital multiplexes would bring a golden age for small films with minority audiences. Surely they would have a space in all those new screens.
In fact, the American tentpole movies were simply scheduled to start at regular intervals, and flowed to colonise almost every screen. They have become a vast harvesting machine, roaming the planet and gobbling the entertainment dollars of entire populations.
