Australia day Honours 2015: outrage collapses under weight of facts

Weakened by general outrage at the Abbott government, exhausted by the effort to not like Prince Philip’s racist jokes, Australian cultural commentators have missed a diplomatic outrage which cuts to the core of the national audience.

Of course we have a host of respectable people who have some wider connection to the sector. Robert Alston, once a  Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts in the Howard Government, and a key player in sector policy from 1996 to 2003 is now an Officer in the General Order. To balance him off, beloved radio journalist Elaine Canty is a Member in the General Division, as much for her many directorships in places like the Melbourne Botanic Gardens as for her historic place as a pioneering female sports broadcaster.
