TIFF 2014: A Single Body hits the headlines

While the most obviously commercial of the Australian offerings caught star-driven attention, the dark short about two men in an abbatoir came through with an award.

While this was a quiet TIFF awardswise for Australian features, with a swag of solid support but nothing to set the world on fire in a fierce, fierce market,  the one short came through with a bang and a blast of trumpets.

A Single Body, accredited jointly to Australia and France, was written and directed by VCA graduate and Canberra kid Sotiris Dounoukos.  It now has the Vimeo Award for Best International Short.  The reason, according to the jury, is ‘For its extraordinary exploration of the value of friendship, hope, and aspiration in an unusually brutal and austere environment… and world — made especially heartbreaking by striking performances by Doudou Masta and Mexianu Medenou..’
