Playpen: What We Do in the Shadows is Icky, Icky, Icky

New Zealanders have such a way with schlock genres. Think share house with vampires, and the country's funniest filmmakers.

The press kit says it all:

“What we do in the Shadows is an 86 minute mockumentary comedy about New Zealand vampires, cowritten, codirected, and costarring Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi”.

That is all New Zealanders need to know. For Australians, it helps to know that Waititi and Clement co wrote, codirected and costar in the film; Waititi directed the short that started it all – Two Cars, One Night – and moved on to Eagle vs Shark, Boy and Flight of the Conchords on which Clement was a key creator, writer and performer. Added to this gang are producers Chelsea Winstanley and the American Emanual Michael, who runs Unison Films which usually deals in much bigger but still indy pictures like Mike Newell’s Great Expectations.
