The Film Critics Circle of Australia really brings the 2013 awards cycle to a close, which gives Tina Kaufman a chance to contemplate the whole strange annual rigmarole.

Well, it’s pretty much the end of a long and wearying awards season, and at the annual awards night put on by the Film Critics Circle of Australia last Tuesday, I started to think about not only why this entertaining and relaxed night was so much more enjoyable than the glamorous, glossy and highly produced events like the AACTAs and the Oscars, but what could actually be learnt from such an evening?
