Every death in the screen sector hurts terribly, but some funerals mark the loss of our deep history. I’ve kept this obituary of Judy Adamson by Tina Kaufman for our final 2013 edition because it reaches back beyond the film renaissance, and pays tribute to the very work of preservation and interpretation.

Judy Adamson, a stalwart of Film Australia and a great film historian, died on 2 August at the age of 84. In her two periods of working for the Commonwealth Film Unit and Film Australia, she amassed the richest, most encyclopaedic knowledge of the institution, its people, and especially its films. She became, in a sense, the custodian of its corporate memory.
