For Australians, who have lived through the decline in Australian drama, the occasional excitement of an international remake, the ABC’s new money and the rise of the shorter form drama, overseas sales mean cash and credibility. Let’s face it: original television production in Australia has been on a steady decline for over a decade. A study published by Screen Australia found that the 2000/2001 season saw 847 hours of TV drama made, while the volume in 2011/2012 dropped to 227 hours, with less and less hours of telemovies made in all the interim years.
