Open Channel’s CERTIFICATE III IN MEDIA filmmaking program offers people wanting to get all the benefits of “going to film school”, but in an intensive 16-WEEK experience. No prior experience is necessary, but a desire to tell stories and learn practical skills is essential. School leavers, career-changers and university graduates are all encouraged to apply.

Providing hands-on learning across a range of screen crafts, the course is taught by leading Victorian filmmakers out of our Industry Skills Centre based at DOCKLANDS STUDIOS MELBOURNE. Participants learn how to research and write scripts, produce films, direct and work with interview subjects or actors, and learn skills such as operating cameras, lighting and sound equipment, editing, sound post-production, and motion graphics.

Very few courses give participants the opportunity to make their own industry-standard 10-minute film, documentary or webseries in such a short space of time. Participants have access to the latest in High Definition digital production technology. The finished films are provided opportunities to screen on Channel 31, at a cinema, or in online platforms. Past students of this course have also had their work screened at National and International festivals, and broadcast on National TV.

After the course, Open Channel provides the opportunity of undertaking an Industry attachment through our connections with professional film and television productions.

MICHAEL BISSELL completed his first documentary film in our Certificate III in Media course in late 2012, and explored his passion for the moving image. After his course, Open Channel supported Michael to get a Camera Department attachment on ABC TV series, PROBLEMS (starring Sam Simmons) as a Video Split Operator. This led to another attachment on SBS series BETTER MAN (starring David Wenham, Bryan Brown, Claudia Karvan, begins Thursday 25 July, 8.30pm on SBS ONE) and then more recently his first paid role on Channel Nine’s HOUSE HUSBANDS SERIES 2.
