With animation being just that bit more abstract – stuff contrived to resemble moving characters held to resemble distillations of the world etc etc – Tara Judah was inspired by MISF 2013 to think about the word ‘film’ in a medium which is no longer even ‘video’ but.. what.. ‘digitema’?

The Melbourne International Animation Festival (MIAF) took place over eleven days at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Throughout the festival, the word ‘film’ was notably absent. Perhaps in our now digital age we ought to dispose of the term altogether? Still, the festival wasn’t re-titled the Melbourne International Digital Cinema Package Animation Festival and the venue hasn’t yet become the Australian Centre for the Pixelated Image, so perhaps the absence of the word ‘film’ has less to do with screen formats and more do to with the way in which we understand animation as an creative art form.
