Not only did Australian audiences pour out for The Great Gatsby, so did the critics. Or so Village Roadshow claims.

$6,789,193 on 587screens in its first weekend. Best Australian opening ever. The screen average is 11,567/screen; anything over $10,000 is blockbuster territory.

However, we should put this in perspective. This is a big, bold film that is attempting to rig the biggest possible tentpole in the elephant-strewn paddock. In that absolute comparison, where no-one really cares about its nationality and the budgets are not scrimped, the real top ten in Australia starts with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at $18.3m, and ends at The Avengers at $13.2m.
