Flickerfest has continued the trend for industry professionals to enter and dominate the short film awards. Yardbird, selected as the Best Australian Short Film, was directed by a TVC director (Good Oil’s Michael Spiccia), written by Julius Avery and produced by Jessica Mitchell. Mirrah Foulkes won Best Direction of an Australian Short for Dumpy Goes to the Big Smoke (produced by David Michod and Michael Cody).

Yardbird was one of the Australian selections for the Cannes International Film Festival in 2012. Avery’s first feature film, Son of a Gun, starring Ewan McGregor, is due to go into production in Western Australia.
