As Victoria’s leading industry based training provider, Open Channel training is focused on providing pathways for its graduates into work. With over 30 years training experience, you’ll find our graduates working throughout the industry. Recent graduates of Open Channel are now working recording sound for Channel Nine, and assisting in the production department of comedy series ‘Problems’ broadcasting later this year on ABC TV.

Open Channel offers a nationally recognised CERTIFICATE III PROGRAM for emerging filmmakers.

Rob Redfern completed his Certificate III in Media with Open Channel in August 2012, specialising in Documentary. Rob’s student film, Going Public starred well known actor Jeremy Kewley (Underbelly). After completing his course, Open Channel supported Rob to get an industry attachment in the production department on the comedy series Problems, leading to paid work on the series. Problems will air on ABC TV later this year.

Open Channel offers industry-led PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SHORT COURSES for both emerging and early career practitioners, and for seasoned professionals. These short courses, taught by leading industry professionals are run on demand, and span most production disciplines – including writing, producing, directing, camera, sound, design, lighting, and editing.

Jason Conduit completed a Location Sound course with industry leader Gary Wilkins (The Pacific, Where the Wild Things Are), and went on to work as a Sound Recordist with GTV Channel 9, where he has been working full-time for 20 months. Says Jason of his experience at Open Channel, “Gary’s knowledge and expertise equipped me with exactly the right skills to secure the position I now hold.”

Open Channel’s ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF SCREEN AND MEDIA (FEATURE FILM AND TV SERIES DEVELOPMENT) is the only course of its type in Australia, offering participants the chance to learn the business and creative skills needed to guide their script through development over a 12 month period. The course is taught by Producers, Writers, Directors and Development Executives behind such film and TV productions as Red Dog, Snowtown, The Slap, Terra Nova, Blue Heelers, Not Quite Hollywood, Lake Mungo and Offspring.

Since beginning the course, 2012 student Jane Hampson has worked as writer on ABC series Dance Academy, and her feature project Tamil Tigress was selected to pitch at Melbourne International Film Festival 37ºSouth: PostScript & Direct – a special initiative that enables selected emerging local screenwriters and screenwriter/producer teams to meet, and pitch to, a range of experienced Australian/NZ producers.

Live script readings of Advanced Diploma projects will take place through November and December this year. Sign up to our eNews OPENLINE to be informed of the live reading dates.

Applications for the 2013 program will open LATE 2012.
Fee subsidies may be available for eligible students in our Nationally-recognised accredited programs.

As a student you not only have access to small class sizes, the latest industry gear, and the most experienced industry trainers, but Open Channel offers an extensive network of filmmaker resources, events and initiatives to help you take that next step.
