AFTRS OPEN has two great upcoming industry courses: Camera Assistants Workshop (28 Nov – 2 Dec) and The Audition Process for Directors (6 – 7 Dec).
Camera Assistants Workshop (28 Nov – 2 Dec)
This hands-on and extremely practical workshop is unique in Australia and was so popular earlier this year we’re running it again. The course will teach you all you need to know about becoming a Camera Assistant in drama, documentary and commercials.
AFTRS Cinematography lecturer and expert DOP Erika Addis conducts this 5-day course with guest industry Data Wrangling and Assistant Camera practitioners. Exercises and lectures will be delivered at the AFTRS Sydney campus using 35mm and digital camera equipment. There will also be a visit to a leading Sydney equipment rental house.
Course content includes: On set duties and protocols – with practical
experience, assembling digital and film cameras and accessories , data wrangling and digital workflow, film stock management, slating techniques, focus pulling basics and loading 35mm magazines.

The Audition Process for Directors (6 – 7 Dec)
This short course is for directors who want to ensure they’re getting the
most out of their audition process.
Over two evenings experienced director Ian Watson (Secret Life of Us,
Love My Way, Packed to the Rafters) will look at choosing the right scenes, getting the most out of the actor, knowing when enough is enough, casting against type and casting with type, auditioning non actors and children, using improvisation and working with casting agents.
In the second session the course will involve practical work with
professional actors in an audition situation and Directors will have the
option of using their own material.
